By Firefighter Jared Hirschberg

The Croton Falls Fire Department has been 100% volunteer since 1892. Over the course of each year, we respond to nearly 800 emergency calls. We respond to a variety of calls, including medical assists, car accidents, animal rescues, electrical hazards, fire alarms, structure fires, and more.

We are a "home response" department, which means our members are not required to staff each fire station in order to respond to calls. When dispatched to a call, our members will respond to one of the two firehouses in North Salem, get dressed in their gear, hop on a fire apparatus, and respond to the scene of the dispatched incident. There is no requirement for members to be "on call", therefore it's entirely up to each member of CFFD to respond to an incident based on their availability.

The CFFD provides all members with their own personalized set of fire gear in order to respond to emergencies and attend training. New members are provided with in-house training to become acclimated with the CFFD operations and procedures. New members will also have the ability to take classes offered by New York State and Westchester County to become certified exterior or interior firefighters depending on each member's desire. Once a new member completes the basic exterior firefighting operations course, or known as "BEFO", they are able to enroll in the interior firefighting operations course, or better known as "IFO". Once a member completes their probationary period and training courses provided by New York State, they will be cleared based on their level of certifications.

Other than responding to emergency calls and attending training, our membership attends various other events throughout the year, including monthly meetings, recruitment events, fire prevention events, fire department picnics, fire department parades, holiday parades, baseball games, and more. Our monthly meetings are held on the third Monday of each month, and we host in-house training on all other Monday's of each month.

Considering we are 100% volunteer, all of our members have careers outside of the fire service. Our members are attorneys, financial advisors, contractors, town employees, teachers, fire/EMS dispatchers, corporate executives, students in school, and more. Although most of the membership have different careers, all members share a common desire to serve their community and respond to those in need.

We strongly urge you to consider joining the Croton Falls Fire Department family and give back to your community. We understand that life gets busy and we appreciate any amount of time that can be volunteered. Please consider joining today and starting your journey with the Croton Falls Fire Department.
