CFFD Take in Working Fire in Somers
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By Firefighter Jared Hirschberg
December 15, 2023

On Friday morning, CFFD volunteers were dispatched to a house fire in Somers. Car 2071, Tanker 88, and Engine 149 responded within minutes of the dispatch. Car 2071 was assigned operations upon arrival and assisted first arriving Somers and Croton Falls companies with stretching lines and pump operations. As 2073 and Tanker 88’s crew began advancing a hose line with mutual aid firefighters through the front door, a mayday was transmitted for a firefighter that fell through the floor. Luckily, the firefighter was able to locate the basement stairs and evacuate through a side door on the first floor. The firefighter received immediate evaluation by EMS and was not injured.

CFFD and mutual aid firefighters worked to extinguish heavy fire after the mayday was cleared until ultimately evacuating due to advanced fire conditions and a compromised structure.

Engine 149 reverse laid 1,200 feet of 5 inch from Tanker 88 to the hydrant to establish a water source. Tanker 88 and Engine 149’s chauffeur’s worked to provide positive water pressure to the scene.

As the fire attack transitioned to defensive, Somers Ladder 48 went into operation flowing water into the second floor and attic while several hose lines were in operation throughout the exterior. CFFD operated on scene along with Somers firefighters for roughly six hours until returning in service.

While Tanker 88, Engine 149, Utility 48, and Utility 28 were operating in Somers, Battalion 13, Car 2073, and Brewster Fire 11-2-2 (Relocate Engine in CFFH) responded to a motor vehicle accident on Route 202 in Somers. Units operated for a short time before returning.

Thank you to the Brewster Fire Department for covering our fire district throughout the duration of the incident.
